Catamounts set record in AE title game route vs. UMBC

Ben Shungu ripped away possession and turned it on.

The University of Vermont men’s basketball senior then bounced into the paint and threw down a flying, one-handed dunk.

Shungu’s coast-to-coast jam rose the Catamounts’ lead to 25 points with 12-plus minutes left in Saturday’s America East Conference championship game.

That’s not a misprint.

The league final is supposed to be a tense, hair-pulling affair, fraught with tension for 40 agonizing minutes.

But the Catamounts, like they’ve been all winter, were too good for that old narrative.

Behind Shungu and Ryan Davis, their two stars, the top-seeded Catamounts systematically dismantled No. 2 Maryland-Baltimore County to race into the NCAA Tournament with an 82-43 victory in front of 3,266 at Patrick Gym.
