KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The No. 7/9 Texas Women’s Basketball Team took down Kansas State 72-65 Friday evening in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship Quarterfinals inside Municipal Auditorium.
With the win, the No.3-seeded Longhorns run their win streak to nine games and secure a spot in Saturday’s semifinal round where they’ll meet up with No.2-seeded and No.10/7-ranked Iowa State. Tip is scheduled for 2 pm CT and will air on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
Both teams traded blows for much of the first half and the Longhorns took a five-point (32-27) lead into the locker room.
The Wildcats trimmed the deficit to four points (47-43) at the 2:54 mark of the third quarter, but the Longhorns went on a 10-0 run to end the quarter. K-State outscored Texas 22-15 fourth but couldn’t close the gap.
senior center Lauren Ebo paved the way on both ends of the floor as she recorded her fourth double-double of the season, matching a career-high 17 points to go along with a team-high 10 rebounds. She finished the game shooting 5-of-7 from the field and went 7-of-8 from the free throw line.
freshman Rori Harmon tallied 16 points and led the team with four assists while Aliyah Matharu and Joanne Allen-Taylor finished with 15 and 12 points, respectively. Matharu was 5-of-7 from behind the arc.
Texas forced 16 turnovers in the game, which led to 19 points and committed just 111 turnovers on the other end. UT held a 28-25 rebounding advantage in the contest
The Longhorns finished the game shooting 39.2 percent (20-of-51) from the field, 50 percent (7-of-14) from three-point range and 89.3 percent (25-of-28) from the charity stripe.
K-State finished the game shooting 44.4 percent (21-of-41) from the field and 30 percent (3-of-10) from behind the arc.
The Wildcats were led offensively by Ayoka Lee who finished with 16 points. Emilee Ebert added 15 points and Serena Sundell finished with 11. Lee also led the team on the glass finishing with seven rebounds.
The Longhorns will now turn their attention to a Cyclones team that is coming off of a 66-60 victory over West Virginia in their quarterfinal matchup. Texas swept its regular season series with ISU.
no. 1-seed Baylor and No. 4-seed Oklahoma are set to square off in the first semifinal of the day at 12 pm Central.
The Big 12 Championship game is slated for Sunday, March 13 at 1 pm Central and will air on ESPN 2.
