Memphis basketball tops SMU, will face Houston for AAC Tournament title

FORT WORTH, Texas — It was the competitive, intense prize fight it was billed up to be. Like two heavyweight boxers going blow for blow, Memphis basketball and SMU squared off Saturday at Dickies Arena in an AAC Tournament semifinal bout.

The Tigers were trying to keep their momentum and beat the only team that has beaten them in the last 50 days. The Mustangs, playing less than 40 miles from their campus, were fighting to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive.

The game featured seven ties and three lead changes before coming down to the wire. But Memphis prevailed 70-63 to advance to the AAC Tournament championship Sunday (2:15 pm CT, ESPN) against Houston.

“We didn’t want to go down 0-3 to those guys and we wanted to show what we were all about as well,” coach Penny Hardaway said. “We’ve come a long ways. Man, I couldn’t be more proud of these guys. They did a heckuva job.”
