Notre Dame, Waupun win girls basketball state championships

ASHWAUBENON – Kettle Moraine’s pressure defense was simply too much for Appleton East to handle Saturday night.

The Lasers (27-3) held East to 32.7% shooting on 17-of-52 in recording a 69-53 victory over the Patriots in the WIAA Division 1 state championship game at the Resch Center.

Kettle Moraine, the top seed, also forced 14 turnovers. Grace Grocholski had 34 points and was 15-of-16 from the free throw line to lead the Lasers.

East (25-4) reached the championship game following a hard-fought 44-40 victory over Brookfield East in Friday’s semifinal. The Patriots were making their third overall appearance at the tournament and first since 1998.

Emily La Chapell led East with 19 points and seven rebounds. Logan Lowry added 17 points for the Patriots.
