Five Named to NCBWA All-Region Teams for Viking Baseball

ST. CLOUD, Minn.– Five Vikings earned NCBWA All-Region honors, released Thursday afternoon by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Augustana led the central region with five honorees, and Central Missouri, Southern Arkansas and Northeastern State each had four honorees.

Carter HowellTanner Brown and Ryan Jares earned First Team honors. Will Olson and Jordan Bartho earned Second Team honors.

The NCBWA All-Region teams are voted on by members of the organization’s regional committees, comprised of sports information directors and athletic communications specialists. Each First-Team member automatically advances to the All-America ballot, and teams will be announced in late May.

Carter Howell † Moorhead, Minn.

Howell earns First-Team All-Region honors for the first time in his career as a Viking. Last year, Howell was an All-Region Second-Team honoree. Starting in all 55 games, Howell is hitting .398 with 60 runs scored, 80 hits, 11 doubles, two triples, 12 home runs, 63 RBI.

The Viking stole 20 bases in 22 attempts and notched 73 hits. He also has a .828 SLG% and a .449 OB%.

Tanner Brown † Harrisburg, SD

Brown sees a spot on the All-Region First Team for the first time in his career. Also named the 2022 NSIC Pitcher of the Year, he leads Augustana as the all-time strikeout leader with 277 and is tied for first in all-time pitching wins with 24.

The lefty also leads the NSIC with 93 strikeouts this season. He has the second-lowest ERA of the six First-Team pitchers at 1.47, which is also the second lowest in DII baseball. Brown holds a record of 7-2. In 73.1 innings pitched, he has struck out 102 hitters and allowed just 12 earned runs to cross the plate.

Ryan Jares † Windsor, Colo.

This is the second All-Region honor for Jares and his first First-Team honor after receiving honors in 2021. Jares held a 7-2 record throughout the 2022 season, tossing 73.1 innings and making 12 starts on the mound. Jares has the eighth-lowest ERA in all of Division II at 1.90.

Overall, he has recorded 101 strikeouts, one shutout and one complete game this season. Jares is the nation’s leader in WHIP as he gives up less than a walk or hit per inning pitched.

Will Olson † Omaha, Neb.

Olson earned Second-Team All-Region honors for the second time in his career, previously receiving the honors in 2021. He has a batting average of .389 and has consistently been one of the top batters for the Vikings this season.

The senior catcher has tallied 68 hits, 12 doubles, 12 home runs, 53 RBI and has started in 50 of the 52 games that he has played this season. Behind the plate, Olson’s fielding percentage sits at .986.

Jordan Bartho † Cold Spring, Minn.

This is Barth’s second time earning NCBWA Second-Team All-Region honors. He previously earned All-Region honors in 2021. Barth holds three career records: most doubles, most RBI and most hits.

In 2022, Barth is fifth in the NSIC with a .382 batting average. He leads the conference in hits with 83 and 217 at bats. Barth has logged 16 doubles, two triples, 14 home runs, 48 ​​RBI and has crossed the plate 59 times in 2022.
