Rocket girls’ track continues tradition, wins districts – Syracuse Journal-Democrat

As the Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca girls’ track team has learned over the years, tradition doesn’t graduate. With state championship teams in 2018 and 2019, this year’s team continues to make its mark. After a contested B-1 district championship on Tuesday, May 10th at Platteview High School head coach Rick Nordhues comments, “It was so much fun watching these kids step up and compete! We were nervous about some injuries keeping us from winning the district title but the girls really came together. It’s a testament to the kids. We were without 2 probable placings in the 300 hurdles and our 4 x 800 relay and the girls still made it happen! I am so proud of them!”

The ladies won the team championship with a score of 110. Runner up was Omaha Skutt with 91.

The Rockets have a state qualifier in each field event, which was highlighted by a first-place finish and school record in the pole vault by senior Kennedy Stanley at 11’6”. Senior Lily Vollertsen dominated both throwing events winning the shot put by over two feet with a throw of 39’6 ½” and the discuss by only 10” over second place with a throw of 121’3”. Senior Kamdyn Stanley’s first long jump of the day clinched her the title with a personal best of 18’2 ”. Senior Hannah Knox placed fourth in the event with a jump of 16’10 ¾” and had to wait through the conclusion of each Class B District to learn she is an additional qualifier. Freshman Jayden Meyer started her standout day in the triple jump with a second-place and personal best jump of 34’5 ¾”. With places 2-4 jumping 5’1” in the high jump, junior Katelyn Smith finished in fourth because of more missed attempts than the others, but still made it to state with the qualifying mark of 5’1”. This was a personal best for Smith.

Each time in the running events were personal bests by the Rocket state qualifiers. In a photo finish, Knox placed second in the 100m dash with a time of 13.01. Second and third places were 13.02 and 13.08, respectively. Meyer won the 400m dash by .59 seconds and the 800m run by 1.27 seconds. The 4x100m and 4x400m relays each placed second to make it to state.

On the boy’s side, junior Jace Voorhees will be representing the Rockets in the discus and 300m hurdles. Voorhees won the discus with a toss of 147’8” which was 9′ further than second place. He also placed third in the hurdles with a time of 43.0.

The Nebraska State Track Meet will be held at Omaha Burke Stadium. Classes A and B will compete May 18-19. Classes C and D compete May 20-21. Events start at 9:00 am each day.
