Batters win you games, bowlers win you tournaments – never before this saying has been proved to be true than in the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). If not from the performances, the points table is clear evidence of the same as four best bowling sides have qualified for the playoffs.
On great batting surfaces, it’s the better bowling side that makes a difference when batters from both sides score huge runs while on slow tracks, the bowling side, which is able to use the surface better according to their attack more often than not ends up on the winning side.
Bowlers doing the talking
The tracks at Wankhede, Brabourne, DY Patil and MCA Stadium, especially offered seam and swing to the bowlers in first few overs and the team who were able to exploit those conditions dented the opponents early in the powerplay which helped in restricting them to chaseable scores .

Middle over intent machines
Another key trend noticed in the season was how batting teams were making the middle-over count. Most times, the powerplay and the death overs are considered the high scoring points in the match, however, this time more than ever, the teams utilizing the period of 7-15 overs were winning the game.
The venues have changed for the playoffs and toss might become a huge factor, especially at Eden Gardens where the ball comes to the bat nicely and on a fresh surface, the ball is likely to fly all over the place and eventually the team who bowl better in crunch situations might go through to the final.
