Despite a little flutter in a few games, Rajasthan Royals opener Jos Buttler has been nothing short of sensational in the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Buttler has smashed four centuries in the ongoing IPL season and currently sits on the top of the list of leading runs-scorers. Buttler has 824 runs to his name in 16 games and is on the verge of achieving a few records in the final against Gujarat Titans (GT).

Buttler, along with spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, has played a huge role in RR making their maiden final since the inaugural edition in 2008 and will be key once again as the Men in Pink make a final push for the coveted trophy.

The destructive opener went through a lean phase in the second half of the league with just 138 runs to his name in 7 innings, however, came storming back in time for the playoffs. Buttler has scored 195 runs in two games in the playoffs and for Gujarat Titans to get past the Royals, dismissing Buttler will be on the top of their to-do list for Sunday.

Buttler made every bowler pay in the last two games except Rashid Khan, against whom he looked absolutely clueless. Rashid bowled his 4 overs in Qualifier 1 for just 15 runs and Buttler didn’t know where the ball was turning and on a bogger ground in Ahmedabad, he could be a handful. Hence, former Indian cricketer, Sanjay Manjrekar suggested that GT should bowl Rashid in the powerplay against Buttler.

Speaking on ESPNCricinfo, Manjrekar said, “Maybe try Rashid Khan against Buttler. Hey bowls stump to stump. Whenever Buttler has been in trouble, it has been with that line that has been straight on, into the stumps and full.”

Daniel Vettori, on the other hand, believed that proper Test-match lengths could work against Buttler and Mohammed Shami is a great exponent of the same. Shami was taken to cleaners by RR skipper Sanju Samson in Kolkata, however, he did keep Buttler quiet in the deliveries he bowled against the English opener.

“I think GT have the personnel, particularly in Mohammed Shami. Seam bowlers have had some success in the past against him with that Test-match line and lengths, trying to challenge the stumps as much as possible. If they can be aggressive in those areas, they can give themselves a chance, or be it a very tough one,” Vettori said.
