Buy Buy Baby Founders List Long Island Mansion House – DIRT

In the small, swanky Long Island village of Oyster Bay Cove, just 35 miles but easily a 90-minute drive into midtown Manhattan, this impressive 1930 Tudor mansion embodies the best of old-school Gold Coast estates. It is beautifully built of stone and slate and brick, spacious inside and out, with formal clipped gardens, a fountain, and even a conservatory. It’s all very Gatsbyesque, indeed. Asking almost $9 million, the stately spread is listed with Nancy Cuite and John Canino of Berkshire Hathaway Laffey International Realty.

Tax records show the current owners as BuyBuy Baby founders Jeffrey and Debra Feinstein. They paid $14.4 million for the vintage estate in 2006, which means they’re staring down the barrel of a whopping $4.6 million loss even if the house sells for its full ask. Jeffrey Feinstein, who with his brother founded BuyBuy Baby in 1996, later sold the company for $67 million to Bed Bath & Beyond, which happens to have been co-founded by their father Leonard Feinstein. The Feinstein brothers purchased a house in Palm Beach for $21 million back in 2018.

So what does almost nine large buy on the Gold Coast nowadays? A seven-bedroom, ten-bathroom mansion of almost 12,000 square feet set on almost seven acres of land; a two-bedroom and two-bath guesthouse alongside a fetching oval-shaped swimming pool; a seven car garage, a tennis court and, a painful annual tax bill of $142,319, though the buyers’ children will be able to go to Syosset public schools, consistently ranked among the best in the United States.

The handsome, multi-winged faux-timbered abode was renovated by John Kean, considered one of the best builder/architects on Long Island. Old millwork and original features now shine among modern touches, such as lavishly appointed new bathrooms. The vaulted and beamed ceiling in the den is impressively lofty, yet the room manages to remain cozy with the fireplace and some impressive artwork. Other rooms of note include the billiard room with wet bar, the kitchen with high-end appliances and the aforementioned conservatory, which doubles as a sun-filled breakfast room. And, for the private homeowners’ retreat, there are two luxurious baths and a pair of dressing areas.

Outside, besides the lush gardens, the pool and the tennis court, there are multiple eating and relaxing areas, as well as a fire pit, an outdoor kitchen, and an inviting pergola.

Why not pour a glass of champagne and invite Daisy and Jay over?
