Joan Filback

FOSTER CITY — Joan Elizabeth Filback, 92, of Foster City, passed away Thursday morning, Sept. 22, 2022, at Marshfield Medical Center-Dickinson at Iron Mountain.

She was born Sept. 29, 1929, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Walter and Marie Filback. Joan graduated from Felch High School in 1946 and left in the fall of 1946 to go work as an aide in Evanston, Ill.

She then went to work for the Illinois Telephone Company. She worked there for more than two years before going to work for Dr. Wood in Chicago for 12 years. She returned home in 1957 to take care of her family. She worked at three different jobs while home for three years. She then left for Kinross, Mich., to work as a lab technician on Kinchloe Air Force Base and worked there until it closed in 1977, then transferred to Cheyenne, Wyoming until 1980. After that she went on to LAX and worked at Diagnostic Products until December 1995 when she retired.

Upon retiring, she had an adventure in Las Vegas for a couple of years and then came home. She taught sewing in the 4-H program in Foster City and Rudyard. She was also a faithful member of Mission Covenant Church in Foster City.

Joan enjoyed family, friends and life. She loved her gardens, playing croquet, bowling and especially her wine. She had a great time sewing with the ladies from Zion Lutheran Church and volunteering at the hospital. She loved the Covenant women. She will be greatly missed by so many.

Joan is lovingly survived by her sisters, Carol Cholipski and Ann (Jack) Nord; a significant number of multi-generational nieces and nephews; as well as several wonderful friends and beloved members of her church community.

She was preceded in death by both parents; a sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and James Marheine; a brother, John Filback; a brother-in-law, Richard Cholipski; and a niece, Susan Sargeant.

A Memorial Service will be held at Mission Covenant Church in Foster City at 11 am on Thursday, Sept. 29. It would have been Joan’s 93rd birthday. Her family is astounded at the dates they are blessed with remembering: 9/29/29 – 9/22/22.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed in Joan’s honor to St. Jude or any other children’s foundation.
